Often, a person will post a sincere message about which he is emotionally sensitive. Skillful trolls know that an easy way to upset the person is to falsely claim that they are a "troll." In forums where most users are similar to each other, outsiders may be perceived as trolls simply because they do not fit into the social norms of that group. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between a user who merely has different values, views, or ideas, and a user who is intentionally trolling. This can lead to genuinely hostile behavior, including flame wars. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll)
Classic Troll Tactic Number 7 : The insincere apology. Similar to Tactic 4, this involves pretending to repent for one's trolling and is accompanied often by great melodrama. Insincere troll apologists hope that they'll be forgiven if only they act disgusted enough with their own behavior.
The Mutt : Alternatively known as Dogs or Yapping Dogs. Mutts are pack animals characterized by their loud barking – vociferous, repetitive, usually ignorant and irrationally critical of anything and anyone they do not like. Mutts frequently become obsessed with a few or even a single poster with whom they disagree, often for purely personal reasons. Like a dog gnawing at a bone, the Mutt will attack the object of its ire over and over again, making a fool of itself in the eyes of those who understand such childish behavior for what it is. Often one Mutt in a group of Yapping Dogs will act as the alpha of the pack, while the others chime in to voice their mindless (but loud) support for their leader's opinions.
Forum Cultists : place a very high premium on groupthink and generally react to differing opinions with outrage, banning all who dare to speak up to them.
No activity gives a forum cultist more joy than to speak ill of a member who has been judged a heretic and banned. The forum cultist knows he may say whatever he likes about the banished member without consequence. As forum cultists are generally cowards who derive a sense of strength from the company of the virtual mob, these are the only times such individuals can feel safe enough to speak their minds. in my gj, apart from here somewhere … It's almost perfectly accurate --- as much as anything can be perfectly accurate. Useful. Consult it if you ever need to …
In one comm, the silliest part is when I told them clearly that I was retiring from the discussion because it was obvious from the responses that my concerns would not be addressed and then removed myself and my stuff from there, one of the then-5 mods there just restarted the attacks, and then instigated other people through a post of her own in her own lj to attack me en masse. Another of those then-5-mods reported me to lj-abuse for asking people associated with my lj and that comm to remove themselves from my lj in the wake of the wank if they so wished.
And they even stalked certain people common to that comm and in my friended-list and my conversations with them
and featured said conversations in their own posts and discussions. I mean what ?!
Honestly ! *Weirded out And Bewildered* They were attacking me. Why extend that to uninvolved people (and all people common to that comm and to my friended-list were uninvolved.) ? Nasty !
And so, I must repeat that before one attacks someone else, one must have a fair idea of said someone's personality. Really ! Isn't it silly if one attacked, expecting an easy passage, and then got royally chewed up ? *Shrugs* Oh well, every action must have an equal and opposite reaction … *Shrugs again* That's inevitable. It'd be unnatural if that didn't happen.
All in all, it is a classic case study for the generalized account I have copied out with the references out there … I'm just sorry the attackers were so short-sighted. *Shrug* Oh well …
