Dear specific author,

when I was talking to my friend about her writing process, while mentioning, in passing, that I like to read John/Ianto, you probably thought I was asking you to link me to your fics that feature this pairing. You were wrong.
See, even though I said that I was considering to start reading Torchwood fics again, during Supernatural's hellatus, I normally like to find fic on my own, by reading the newsletter, or going through the recs at TWH and clarufax.
The fact that I ship John/Ianto and maybe want to read fic about them in the foreseeable future was not an invitation for you to rec me your OOC-vanilla!D/s-hate!sex-littered-with-purple-prose train wreck of a fic with the implicit whoring for me to say something nice about it.
Do you realize that you put me in a very uncomfortable position? When you'll eventually ask me how I liked the fic, which you probably will judging by your previous behavior, I will be either forced to lie and say I didn't read it because I wasn't in the mood yet, or lie and tell how lovely and well written I think your fic is, or send you a copy/paste of this rant. I don't really want to do any of these things.

Technically I have no problem telling someone if I think their work is shit or give con crit, but you left me with the impression that I should be grateful you were so kind to share your prose with me. Guess again. It is also neither appropriate to leave a negative comment on someone's fic - unless they ask for con crit - nor is it good form in my opinion.

Which is why I'm ranting here and not in your face.

No love

The Unspoken Rules by pen_name (NC17)

Fandom: Naruto
Pairing: primarily Skikamaru/Neji but many more
Length: Epic = 15 chapters plus sequel
Author on LJ: [info]penname_please
Author Website: pen_name@adultfanfiction.net
Why this must be read:

With one story, [info]penname_please has addicted me to a pairing I've never read. Heck, I've never really liked Neji. But The Unspoken Rules has given me a new appreciation for Skikamaru/Neji and the ANBU in general.

After a chance meeting on a deadly mission, Skikamaru and Neji find being friends help them survive the pressure of being ANBU. But other pressures they didn't count on - including clan Hyuugai's and their own expectations - could derail their new relationship. What's a lazy jounin just promoted to War Leader to do? Plan for every contingency, of course.

Fast, fun, and insightful, it's a delightful romp and if you can't get enough (like me), also enjoy the series of one-shots sequels (so far, 15) provided in More Unspoken Rules. But definitely, plan to spend a chunk of time and go discover The Unspoken Rules.

Please remember - authors work for feedback.

Browsing an author's profile, I found an HP/something else crossover. The summary sounded interesting, so I clicked. The fist thing in the page?

Warnings: Spoilers, character death, mentions of Harry/Ginny, Ginny bashing (in later chapters)

... aand that's when I stopped reading.

Really, do you have to explicitly bash characters? Specially since it's a crossover, couldn't you just, I don't know, not include the character you don't like?

And the premise was so interesting...

Hi. A while back, a mac 'n cheese recipe was posted here (I think). It had gouda, American and cheddar cheese in it. Unfortunately, I cannot find the recipe and no longer have a saved copy since the motherboard in my previous laptop died. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? One phrase I can remember was "chop the hell out of the onion." LOL.

Dear Fate/Stay Night author,

I did like you fic for the most part, and this is also partially my fault, but I must seriously suggest that you differentiate between characters thinking something and characters remembering something.

Why? Well that involves spoilers dealing with Archer's true identity. Also, bad selfcest mental images... )

I'll take slash and gen happily! But I'd rather the fic didn't contain any other pairings.

Christmas Present help!

Posted by [info]a_polaroid_life in [info]kitchenfaq on 21.11.2009 at 12:42
Hi guys,

I was wondering if you could help me with my sister's Christmas gift. She just recently got into baking, and she has perfected
fondant cakes and have started to take cake orders from friends (who have recommended her to other friends, etc).
Her problem is that she barely has the right tools to even make these cakes. She has a decent piping kit, and only has a 6" cake pan.
What quality baking tools can I get her to help her build her little "business"?
What tools can't you live without when working with fondant and decorating cakes?

So far, I was thinking 8" pans (variety of sizes). Keep in mind she has NO tools. So any ideas for a start-up kit would be great.
Thanks!

Appetizers to impress

My neighborhood is doing a progressive Christmas dinner...
Now instead of full on dinner, each house is going to prepare an appetizer and a drink.
I need ideas for something nice, it is only a group of about 14 adults. We will only have 30 minutes in our house for said, drinks and appetizers.
Yes, I could do cheese and crackers, but I am trying to think outside the box... what can i do?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So I may or may not have a hugeeee folder of baking recipes on my computer and a small obsession with baking around the holidays. :) While searching for some new recipes to try, I stumbled across this video on how to best package baked goods if you are mailing them to someone. Most of the advice is common sense, but I still found it helpful, and if anything, validating that I am doing the right things when sending cookies and other yummy items.

Cuban - Carabean style black beans

Current Mood: curious
Hi everyone

Quick question, last year I traveled to Cuba and with a local I tasted black beans. She made them in a rice cooker and added a prepackaged blend of spices. They were amazing!

I attempted a few times to copie the recipe back home but I was very unsuccessful. I need help.

I have a slow cooker if this helps, I'd like to use that.

Anyone has a recipe or a few tips on how to cook beans? I really want to start including them in my diet.

I know the spice blend had some cumin and oregano, so if you have a few ideas on what I could throw in it.

Thanks!!!!

Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: gen - Blithe
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [info]nullsechs
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read: Albert Blithe has never been a fandom favorite, but this fic will make you wonder why on earth not. He's young and lost and not a warrior, but so very, very human and familiar. This fic will make you ache for Blithe, for everything he was and wasn't and could have been, and maybe there's a bit of you in Blithe and his impossible situation. A straightforward and beautiful character study.

“You’re too damn smart for your own damn good sometimes,” she says, “but you can’t just go thinking yourself through a war, Albert. You can’t just jump out of a plane and hope it’ll make you something you’re not. You’ve got to fight and get your hands dirty and claw your way through other men. Are you prepared to do that?” When she looks at you, her cheeks are wet and her eyes are dark and red, the makeup around them smudged and running in dirty streaks down her face. She grips you firmly at the shoulders, shaking you hard as she forces the words out between her teeth. “Because I am your mother, Albert, and I know that you haven’t got it in you.”

Fandom: BASEBALL RPF
Pairing: Brian McCann/Jeff Francoeur
Length: 12,331
Author on LJ: [info]hollycomb
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read: I have a list of bulletproof - not kinks, exactly - more like . . . plot points or storytelling devices, or what have you that I love seeing touched on in fic. One is the coming-of-age story. The other is internal religious conflict. Another is how the guys' relationship affects their wives/girlfriends and the relationships they have with them. Yet another is how the media and the league react to the players' relationship. Rarely are all four tackled in one story, but [info]hollycomb does it here and she does it well. Brian's internal conflict, as well as the conflicts between Brian and Jeff, Brian and his wife Ashley, and Brian and Jeff's wife Catie give the story so many layers and dimensions. All the characters are sympathetic; there are no villains here. They're all well-rounded and emotionally complex. Another thing that has made me a fan is Forget Everything I Ever Said's "resolute lack of a resolution," as [info]americanleaguer gets that.

Dear YGO writer,

When I was still in the fandom, I frequented both the uncompleted and finished works to distract me from my own massive fiction. Your fiction had a fair amount of reviews, had my OTP, and had an interesting summary. You started off with saying how this was your first story, and because I was new as well, it didn't bother me at all.

As I began reading, I noticed something... off. It--the dialogue, the descriptions, the characterizations... everything--felt so familiar, like I've read this somewhere before. Thinking I've read this before, I searched through the comments and noticed something else: the reviews were strangely similar as well. Then, I got to a specific description: that Character A smelled/tasted like honey, while Character B smelled/tasted like lavender.

It was familiar because I wrote it already. I sent you a message asking if you have read my massive WIP, and you had, and you said you loved it (but never reviewed, of course), and based your story off of mine. Okay. Look, I appreciate your dedication to my story--really, I do--but what you did was not okay. I was never mentioned as your source material. You stole my plot, scenarios, descriptions, characterizations, and just about everything else to write a horrible story. (The quality was completely substandard...) What you did was ridiculous: please, get your own story.

With not-so-much-love,
a fellow puzzleshipper
