... that is to say, the one here.

I had gone for groceries. Limping somewhat, with my currently sprained right ankle. And there were these three guys, one of them looked very Indian, but was obviously Surinamese, the other two were ... possibly local stuff ? - dunno, really. But both pretty much pale.

So, with this ankle of mine, I was walking carefully and slowly, as it was drizzling and the path was a spot slippery. And then these guys approach me, friendly like, and one hands me a little piece of thickish piece of paper. It's in Dutch, and I look at it, and then I look at them, and I asked - What's this ? You see, I don't know Dutch.

The chap who'd given it to me was very eager and explained that the address it bore is that of a church and I could visit it, if I wanted to.

I told him that if I couldn't make it, I'd hand it over to a Catholic friend of mine, as of course I am not a Christian.

In response to which - all three looked surprised and asked me incredulously - You aren't Christian ?

Weird, that. I look entirely Indian. Always. And majority of Indians are Hindus.
Apart from the fact that India has the largest Muslim population of any country in the world.

And then they asked me what did I believe ? That everything ends with death ?

I was rather amused at that and replied - Certainly not !

All three looked confused. The Surinam guy started telling me that he speaks Hindi and he has had his soul saved by having become a Christian.

And then, one of the pale pair asked me whether I didn't want to be saved.

I nearly giggled then. And told them that at the moment, I'm perfectly safe.

Thank God, at that point, they got distracted by other people coming along who they started handing out the same piece of paper to, and I, giggling, said 'Ok, see you later' and buggered off as fast as I could hobble, still giggling sotto voce.

Later on, the rain had increased, and I saw them standing in the middle of the market place, in the rain, singing at the top of their voices. It was quite ... fascinating.

Two days later, I was discussing this with brunobearsky and we decided that :
i - we neither of us care to be 'saved'
ii - Hell is hot, has plenty of barbecues, and is full of friendly, intelligent and cool people
iii - Hell is an extremely festive place, with great music

Therefore, Hell is either in Rio, or in Calcutta (Yes, it's full of fantastic kebab joints !) - both of which I know reasonably well.

All this made me feel very happy and distracted me a good deal from the sprain pain.

Now, brunobearsky had mentioned during our conversation that he particularly preferred the 'J's Witnesses' approaching him, because he'd once managed to make two of them burst into tears. Apparently, one felt insulted by his attempts of sane discussion, the other was distressed cuz 'someone as clever as he didn't want to be saved'.

And so I went googling for all sorts of things, and found the name of this book, and found that the authoress was harrassed a lot because of this book and that it wasn't very easily available ... And so, when I found it, I absolutely had to post it - but f-locked, because many of the people reading that post are in places where those S-logists exist. I have been reading it, and frankly, it ain't nice. Quite unpleasant, as a matter of fact. So I'd rather keep things safe than be even a little sorry.

I hope everyone has been well. I was awfully ill last week, and before that things were such that I haven't been able to go properly into lj, ij, jf and dw for a long time. The end result is that my email accounts are a mess and I daren't dnld mails to outlook express till I clean them up online first. I'll be doing that from afternoon today. I feel almost nearly myself today.

Also, I plan to buy the paperback of 'Unseen Academicals' as soon as it is out !

But that's a long way away :(
